The Complications Working Party (CWP) carries out research, provides education and best practice advice on preventing, recognising and managing complications in the fields of hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapies.
Despite much progress in the field, treatment-related mortality and morbidity needs to be further improved to ensure patients and their families move beyond their therapy trajectory and return to enjoying life.
In short, we want to lay the foundation for an optimal clinical management that ensures excellent survival and quality of life.
Our major fields of interest are:
- Early complications: e.g. graft failure, VOD/SOS, transplant-associated microangiopathy, risk factors, co-morbidities, toxicity of conditioning regimen and supportive care
- Acute and chronic graft versus host disease: all the aspects from risk factors through diagnosis to treatment
- Survivorship: understanding aspects linked to long-term recovery from a holistic and patient-cantered health perspective (e.g. patient reported outcomes, communication techniques, fertility & sexual function, resilience, return to work, health related behaviours, organ-specific late complications and subsequent malignancies)
- CAR-T complications: all aspects of treatment-related complications
- Artificial intelligence: use of AI methods to better predict, diagnose or manage complications of cellular therapies
