Explore the latest in sickle cell disease and thalassaemia — from pathophysiology to cutting-edge treatments. With keynote lectures and interactive discussions, this meeting sparks exchange and showcases curative and emerging innovations.

On behalf of the EBMT, we are pleased to invite you to the educational meeting of the Haemoglobinopathy Working Party (HWP) of the EBMT, which will take place in Regensburg, Germany, from Wednesday, 16 September to Friday, 18 September 2026. Now in its 8th edition, this meeting has become a well-established and highly valued event in the field of haemoglobinopathies.

The meeting will cover a broad range of topics addressing key aspects of sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, including pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Its highly interactive format—featuring roundtable discussions and ample opportunity for lively debate—encourages dynamic exchange, particularly benefiting young investigators through direct interaction with leading experts.

The three-day programme will include two keynote lectures, alongside plenary sessions and focused discussions on curative approaches, including alternative transplantation strategies and gene editing, as well as other emerging topics in the field.

The meeting will also host the HWP business meeting, during which proposals will be discussed and future studies planned. Overall, the programme is designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing through a combination of scientific sessions, interactive exchanges, and networking opportunities.

In line with the scientific scope of the Working Party and the educational objectives of the course, participants will have numerous opportunities to engage with experts during both formal sessions and social events. The welcoming atmosphere and strong sense of community—established since the first meeting in Regensburg in 2013—continue to make this a truly unique experience.

This stimulating scientific programme will bring together world-leading experts who are actively advancing our understanding of haemoglobinopathies.

The Educational Meeting will be held in Regensburg, Germany, only in person at the Novotel Zentrum Regensburg.

How to get to the venue:

Regensburg is easily accessible from several major airports:

  • Munich Airport (MUC) – approximately 1.5 hours by train
  • Nuremberg Airport (NUE) – approximately 1.5 hours by train

Regensburg is well connected by Germany’s rail network. Direct trains run frequently from Munich, Nuremberg, and other major cities. The Novotel Zentrum Regensburg is a 5-minute taxi, or 10-minute walk from Regensburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station).

Travel and accommodation

Participants will be responsible for covering their travel and accommodation costs. Please note that EBMT does not manage hotel availability or set prices.

EBMT cannot accept liability for personal accidents or loss of or damage to the private property of participants. Participants are advised to take out their own personal travel and health insurance for their trip.

Please ensure you have a valid passport/ID to travel to Germany. Should you need a VISA letter, you will be able to download it after the registration process.
