23rd Congress of the Brazilian Society of BMT (SBTMO) and 3rd Meeting of the Latin American Blood and Marrow Transplantation Society (LABMT)

31st July - 3rd August 2019 in Brasilia, Brazil

By the LABMT Nurses Group: Mariela Blanco, Cristina Vogel (Chairs) Lidiane Soares, Tania Waisbeck, Ana Grace Barrantes (Organizing Committee).

The meeting was held with the presence of national and international relevant authorities in the field of hematology and blood and marrow transplantation.

The educational program, organised by LABMT Nurses Group and EBMT Nurses GEC (Global Education Committee), involved an overview of transplant process in line with JACIE standards and included local nurses from Latin America as speakers and chairs, with more than 300 attendees from Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Perú, Costa Rica among others. We had the privilege to listen about the experience of two transplant patients, which is always very instructive and leads us towards improved patient-centered care.

The LABMT initiated activities to establish the Nurses Group in 2018 through educational webinars and collaborative contacts, particularly with the EBMT GEC. The aim of this collaboration is to establish educational programs for nurses in line with JACIE standards providing support to centers involved in JACIE accreditation, and deliver evidence-based nurse practice and excellence in care for our transplanted patients.

One of the aims of the EBMT Nurses Group together with the GEC Nurses Committee is to empower nurses to give support for the development of national groups, where a network can be established to share knowledge and achieve common aims. This year, several steps have been taken to establish the LABMT Nurses group. The event in Brasilia gave us the possibility to work together to discuss present and future steps.

This group joins all countries of Latin America, which makes it a great challenge and opportunity. The network has been created and continues growing, joining more than 250 nurses in the region so far, with representatives from each of the Latin American countries performing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

It has been a pleasure to attend this meeting, sharing experience and knowledge. We are positive that all the hard work and commitment of these groups will form a successful LABMT Nurses Group.
