Richard Szydlo, July 1 1959 – December 18 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of Dr Richard Szydlo, medical statistician at Imperial College London, on 18 December 2023 after a period of ill-health. Richard was a long-standing member of the EBMT Statistical Committee and enhanced the use of statistics for HCT studies. He was one of the main actors in the organisation of statistics courses and sessions at the EBMT Annual Meeting, which were attended by physicians, nurses and scientists from across the world. Richard joined the haematology department at the Hammersmith Hospital as their biostatistician in 1989, and made substantial contributions to their research output in stem cell transplant and all other aspects of blood diseases.
Richard once wrote in an article published in The Lancet Haematology: “It’s very motivating to work on projects that can potentially influence survival rates”.
The EBMT Community will pay tribute to Richard during the 50th Annual Meeting in Glasgow and his lifetime achievements will be commemorated in a formal obituary in Bone Marrow Transplantation in due time.
