Inspectors are the backbone of JACIE; without them, there is no certification process. Becoming an inspector is a wonderful way to contribute to maintaining global quality standards. As the number of JACIE applications has increased, we are constantly looking for new inspectors to join our ranks. At the moment, we are particularly keen to hear of German, French and Spanish speaking Clinicians and Quality Managers.

Introduce yourself and your role(s) and position(s) within EBMT and outside of EBMT
I am Adam Gassas, Paediatric Haematology, Imperial College Healthcare at St Mary’s Hospital. JACIE inspector from 2015 to date (golden pin). Previously FACT inspector from 2010 to 2015. SickKids, Toronto, Canada (10 inspections in Canada and North America). Active member of the FACT education committee.
Why did you decide to become a JACIE inspector?
- Improving my BMT programme and learning from other centres.
- Networking with different international colleagues and opportunities for collaboration, research and common standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols.
What has been the most memorable inspection that you have ever done?
A low-income country JACIE inspection. It was an amazing experience with a dedicated team doing an excellent job despite very limited resources. Their BMT outcome was comparable to other state-of-the-art international BMT units.
What ‘keys to successful JACIE certification’ can you share with us?
The key is to be well prepared and have the documents updated and in order. On inspection day, the availability of a senior person in the programme who is familiar with all aspects of JACIE is vital. Also, a team meeting beforehand to establish who is best to answer queries in different aspects of the inspection.
How has your career/work benefited from being a JACIE inspector?
- Sharing other programmes’ experiences and bringing them back to my own programme.
- Meeting different colleagues and networking.
Do you have any tips or advice for anyone who aspires to become a JACIE Inspector?
It is a great opportunity and a very fulfilling experience with excellent teamwork. Also, making new friends.
