Scientific report 2025 of the Chronic Malignancies Working Party (CMWP)

Major achievements

Overall, 2025 was a highly productive year for the CMWP. We continued to refine our study portfolio to enhance scientific output and prioritise contemporary research. The CMWP published 10 papers, including international panel recommendations on allo-HCT in MDS and “nonclassical” MPNs and MDS/MPNs. In addition, the CMWP presented oral and poster abstracts at several high-impact international meetings, including EBMT25, ASH25, iwCLL25, as well as national haematological congresses. During the Practice Harmonisation & Guidelines Committee
(PH&G) Meeting in Berlin, the CMWP continued work on international recommendations, including those addressing donor-derived haematologic neoplasms arising after allo-HCT, MDS/MPN, and T-cell prolymphocytic leukaemia in the allo-HCT setting.

The CMWP held highly productive Business and Educational meetings in Florence and more recently in Rome, alongside the ADWP in September 2025. The joint CMWP & ADWP educational meeting, approached from a “chronic malignancies perspective,” focused on current allo-HCT guidelines for MDS. Additional key topics included diagnostic and prognostic aspects of MDS, presented by invited guest Professor Mario Cazzola, who summarised major advances in MDS genomics. Professor Jaroslaw Maciejewski provided a translational perspective, shifting the focus from clinical practice to laboratory research, while Professor Maria Teresa Voso discussed therapeutic strategies for MDS outside the transplant setting. Participants also gained insights into optimising allo-HCT outcomes for MDS, including bridging strategies, conditioning regimens, immunosuppression, and post-transplant treatments. Further high-quality and contemporary presentations addressed VEXAS syndrome and autoimmune disorders in CMML, highlighting the overlap between CMWP and ADWP activities. In addition, the implementation of bispecific antibodies in the therapeutic armamentarium of multiple myeloma was clearly presented by Dr Patrick Hayden.

Future CMWP educational meetings are planned for Barcelona in November 2026, alongside the ALWP, and we look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an exciting and innovative event.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the entire CMWP team, including all principal investigators, subcommittees, and the data management, programming, and statistical teams, as well as all contributing members who have worked tirelessly on our studies. Their outstanding expertise, dedication, and collaborative spirit have enabled us to deliver robust evidence for the community. As I enter my final months as CMWP Chair, I wish the incoming Chair every success in leading this exceptional group forward.
