Scientific report 2025 of the Acute Leukemia Working Party (ALWP)
Major achievements
The ALWP continues its activities through the active engagement of its members and the support of the EBMT staff. The collaborative efforts within the Working Party have enabled the successful development and completion of several important studies during the past year, addressing clinically relevant questions in the field of HCT for patients with acute leukaemia.
A number of studies have focused on donor selection strategies, including comparative studies evaluating outcomes following transplantation from younger haploidentical donors versus older matched unrelated donors, as well as donor selection in elderly patients. Additional studies have evaluated the prognostic impact of cytogenetic and molecular risk stratification, including outcomes according to the ELN 2022 adverse cytogenetic subgroups and the clinical relevance of specific genetic categories.
Further studies have explored strategies aimed at optimizing transplant approaches through risk-adapted methodologies. These include studies assessing cytogenetic- and molecular risk–driven conditioning intensity and analyses evaluating the impact of individual comorbidities in transplant recipients receiving post-transplant cyclophosphamide–based GVHD prophylaxis. In addition, analyses on evolving treatment practices, including the increasing use of pharmacologic maintenance therapy following allo-HCT in patients with AML.
Collectively, these and many other studies contribute to an expanding portfolio of ALWP research. The contributions of ALWP members, study investigators, and the EBMT staff are gratefully acknowledged. The ALWP remains committed to fostering collaborative research within the EBMT network with the aim of further advancing the field of transplantation in acute leukaemia.
