Scientific report 2020 of the Chronic Malignancies Working Party (CMWP)

Major achievements

The first scientific and educational meeting took place at the Hotel Innside in central Leipzig on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th January. Following a busy day reviewing and discussing ongoing and planned studies, our local host, Professor Uwe Platzbecker, organised a very enjoyable dinner in the Leipzig Ratskeller located in the New Town Hall. This was followed by a Saturday morning educational symposium spanning novel antibody-based myeloma therapies, the merits of bridging patients with myelodysplasia prior to allogeneic transplantation and the future of cellular therapies.

By March, it was clear that COVID-19 was going to change our lives. Following the deferral of the Annual meeting to September, the CMWP board members got to grips with Zoom and other teleconferencing technologies. The learning curve was steep over the following few months as headphones were purchased and we began to appreciate the importance of knowing when to mute ourselves. However, as the end of 2020 approaches, we have all learned that we can work collaboratively without having to travel as much. Subcommittee Chairs, Principal Investigators and the Leiden Office data managers and statisticians have continued to advance a broad range of studies across the diseases covered by the Working Party: (1) Myelodysplasia including CMML (2) Plasma Cell Diseases (3) Ph. Neg Myeloproliferative Disorders (4) CML (5) CLL and (6) Practice Harmonisation and Guidelines.

The 46th EBMT Annual Meeting took place virtually from 29th August to 1st September and featured several CMWP studies. The second scientific and educational meeting, also virtual, was held in early October and was a great success, thanks in no small part to the excellent technical support provided by Núria Planagumà and colleagues from the EBMT Education and Events Department.
