Recent advances in lymphoma and CLL treatment, including CAR T-cell therapy and other cellular therapies.
Earlier in my career as an Oncology-Haematology Nurse, my role was primarily focused on the safe administration of chemotherapy, monitoring patients throughout treatment, and managing treatment-related toxicities and side effects. While this foundation remains essential, the field of haematology has evolved dramatically over the past decade with the introduction of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), CAR T-cell therapy, and other advanced cellular therapies.
These innovative treatments have transformed patient outcomes, but they have also expanded the competencies required of nurses. Today's cellular therapy nurses are expected to have specialised knowledge in patient selection, apheresis, stem cell collection, cell processing pathways, conditioning regimens, transplantation procedures, immune reconstitution, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), long-term survivorship care, and patient education.
To support this growing complexity, dedicated educational programmes have become increasingly important. One notable example is the EBMT Online Learning Course for Nurses, which provides structured, evidence-based education covering haematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapies. The course equips nurses with the theoretical knowledge and practical understanding required to safely care for patients undergoing transplantation and advanced cellular therapies. As a result of this continuous investment in education and professional growth, I have had the privilege of advancing from learner to educator, including becoming an APHON Instructor (and not just a member), enabling me to contribute to the development of future generations of haematology, oncology and BMT nurses. This achievement reflects the broader commitment of our organization to advancing nursing excellence, lifelong learning, and the delivery of safe, compassionate, and specialized care for patients and their families.
Beyond formal education, these programmes promote standardization of nursing practice across international transplant and cellular therapy centres, encouraging best practices, patient safety, and continuous professional development. They empower nurses to become active contributors to multidisciplinary teams, research initiatives, quality improvement projects, and patient advocacy efforts.
At institutions such as Yas Clinic Hospital, where advanced transplantation and CAR T-cell programs including the Gene Therapy are rapidly expanding, ongoing nursing education is critical to maintaining excellence in patient care. Investing in specialized training ensures that nurses remain at the forefront of innovation and are fully prepared to support patients throughout their complex cellular therapy journey
Future Challenges and Opportunities in Lymphoma and CLL Care
As a Centre of Excellence in Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, accredited by the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi and an accredited facility by the Foundation of Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT), as Dr Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic in partnership with ADSCC, once said: “All the achievement of our organization reflects the efforts and expertise of our entire team of scientists, haematologists, immunologists, nurses and technicians and beyond."
However, one of the key challenges in lymphoma and CLL care is ensuring equitable access to innovative therapies, particularly for patients from underserved or less privileged backgrounds who may face financial, geographic, or healthcare system barriers. While advances such as CAR T-cell therapy and other cellular therapies have significantly improved outcomes, access to these potentially life-saving treatments remains uneven across different regions and populations.
At the same time, this challenge presents a significant opportunity. In the UAE, Yas Clinic Hospital and Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) are well positioned to help address these disparities by expanding regional access to advanced cellular therapies. Through investments in local CAR T-cell manufacturing, hematopoietic cell transplantation programmes, state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, and translational research, ADSCC is strengthening the UAE's role as a regional centre of excellence for cellular therapy and innovation. This local capability has the potential to reduce dependence on treatment abroad, improve timely access for patients across the region, and contribute meaningfully to the future of haematologic cancer care in the Middle East and beyond.
