Welcome to our EBMT Nurses' Practical Skills site, where you will find three expert-led educational videos developed by the EBMT Nurses Group to support safe, high-quality, patient-centred care in clinical practice. These resources provide clear, step-by-step guidance on key procedures in haematology, stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy, including how to perform bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy, how to safely insert and manage a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), and how to thaw and infuse cryopreserved stem cells and CAR T-cells, helping nurses and allied healthcare professionals strengthen competency, confidence and consistency in patient care.

How to Bone marrow Aspirate and Trephine
This expert-led EBMT Nurses Group video was developed jointly by The Christie School of Oncology. It provides a comprehensive, practical guide to performing bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy safely and confidently in clinical practice. Presented by an experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioner, John Murray, it covers indications, consent, patient preparation, pain management, equipment, technique, sample handling and post-procedure care. Ideal for nurses and clinicians involved in haematology and stem cell transplantation, the video supports high standards of training, competency and patient-centred care in outpatient bone marrow procedures.
This video was developed jointly by The Christie School of Oncology and The European Bone Marrow Transplantation Society.
How to Insert and Manage a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC)
This educational video by the EBMT Nurses Group provides a clear overview of the safe insertion, management and care of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) for nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and patients and their families involved in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. It explains the indications for PICC use, pre-procedure patient assessment and contraindications, and outlines the sterile insertion technique using real-time ultrasound guidance, including tip confirmation and catheter fixation. The video also covers catheter maintenance, flushing protocols, recognition and management of potential complications such as infection, occlusion and thrombosis, appropriate catheter selection, and safe blood sampling. Finally, it emphasises patient and caregiver education prior to discharge to ensure ongoing PICC care and prompt identification of problems.

How to Thaw and Infuse Cryopreserved Stem Cells and CAR T-Cells
This professionally produced EBMT Nurses Group video offers a practical, step-by-step guide to the safe thawing and infusion of cryopreserved haematopoietic stem cells and CAR T-cell therapy. Designed for nurses and allied healthcare professionals working in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy—and suitable for sharing with patients and families—it highlights best practice, patient safety and clinical preparedness throughout the procedure. Combining clear explanations with clinical insight, the video supports high-quality care, confidence in practice and consistent standards across transplant and cellular therapy services.
