Each edition of the Annual Meeting brings new initiatives designed to support our sustainability goals. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and inspire positive change beyond the meeting itself.
Making EBMT 2027 more sustainable
🚏 Travel Sustainably
- Make sustainable travel choices: walk, cycle or use public transport whenever possible.
- Choose direct flights or travel by train whenever feasible to reduce carbon emissions.
- Consider offsetting the carbon emissions from your journey.
♻️ Reduce Waste
- Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it at the water stations available throughout the venue.
- Sort your waste using the recycling stations provided.
- Take only what you plan to eat to help reduce food waste.
- Avoid printing by using the event app or digital programme.
- Take notes digitally instead of using paper.
- Donate or reuse conference materials and merchandise whenever possible.
- Help reduce single-use plastics by opting for reusable alternatives.
🌿 Support Local and Sustainable Businesses
- Choose local restaurants and cafes to support the local economy.
- Purchase locally made products and gifts from responsible and sustainable businesses.

- Treat all participants with kindness, respect and professionalism.

Sustainability initiatives at EBMT 2027
🥗 Food and beverage:
- Water fountains are available, encouraging participants to bring their reusable water bottles.
- Catering focuses on circular products and processes, local products to reduce transport impact, and vegetarian and vegan options. Where disposables are required, circular or recycled-material alternatives are used as far as possible.
- Food leftovers and other surplus materials can be collected and donated after events, in collaboration with relevant local organisations and in accordance with applicable regulations.
🎒 Materials:
- Congress lanyards are made from polyester fibers sourced from recycled PET bottles. This material reduces environmental impact.
- Our badges are made from 100% biodegradable paper.
- Congress backpacks are crafted from 100% GRS-certified recycled polyester.
💻 Going paperless:
- We are increasing digital solutions to avoid printing.
- The Congress Virtual Platform and App provide access to the scientific program, venue floorplans, and other important conference information.
- Virtual attendance certificates will be provided.
Sustainability at Rotterdam Ahoy
Rotterdam Ahoy is committed to reducing the environmental and social impact of events through a range of sustainable initiatives. Key measures include:
- 100% renewable energy – 100% gas-free venue powered by renewable energy, supported by solar and wind energy.
- Energy-efficient operations – LED lighting is used as standard, energy-efficient installations, heat recovery systems and smart energy management to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
- Renewable heating and cooling – Heating and cooling are supported by aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), district heating and a thermal smart grid.
- Waste reduction and recycling – Waste separation is available during the congress, as well as during build-up and breakdown. Rotterdam Ahoy follows circularity principles focused on reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling wherever possible.
- Responsible water management – Rainwater is collected and reused for purposes such as window and floor cleaning, helping to reduce the use of fresh water.
- Climate-adaptive infrastructure – Rotterdam Ahoy uses measures such as permeable paving, green areas and a 1,713 m² sedum roof to retain rainwater, provide cooling and improve insulation.
- Local and social impact – By working with local organisations, educational institutions and social partners to create employment, training and volunteering opportunities, while also supporting initiatives that benefit the Rotterdam-Zuid community.
