EBMT 2008: 7th Meeting of the Data Management Group

The Data Management Group looks forward to welcoming you at EBMT 2008. In Florence we will be offering a number of new sessions. For an overview of the full Data Management programme and information relating to the congress please click here.

New Educational Sessions

On Monday morning we are kicking off the programme with two new sessions aimed primarily at data managers who are new to this role, however we think it will also be of interest to our more experienced data managers: Joachim Blankart will be our guest speaker from the Nurses Group, who will present an overview of the stem cell transplant process from beginning to end. We are also pleased to have two experienced data managers on board (Jaap Kuipers & Hanny Bakker) from two different hospitals in The Netherlands, who can offer advice on the role of data management and methods that have improved their day-to-day work.

Discussion Forum

On Monday evening (16.00 – 17.00) we will be holding a new forum for data managers/ physicians to discuss data management topics.

Carmen Ruiz de Elvira will give an introduction on behalf of the Registry, with information on recent developments and plans for the future. To complement this we have invited Stephen Marcos Jones (EBMT Communications & Support Officer) to present an overview of the EBMT, so that you can hear more about the organisation as a whole, and how Registry & Data Management fits into this structure.

Following this there will be an opportunity to ask further questions relating to data management. We believe this will work best if you email questions in advance. Please contact the Registry Helpdesk with your ideas and questions for the forum. Ddata managers are encouraged to bring a physician with them to this forum so that they are on hand to help with any clinical/definition queries. Their support will be greatly appreciated.

New ProMISe Open Learning Centre

During the congress, a small computer room will be open from 09.00 – 16.00 on Monday & Tuesday for users to drop by and ask specific questions regarding data entry, exports and reports.

Data Managers attending ProMISe training at EBMT 2007 in Lyon

EBMT/Registry staff will be available at specific times. (A rota of staff and languages spoken will be displayed at the room entrance and the EBMT stand).  The learning centre should not be considered as a substitute for the group training sessions on offer, however through this new initiative we hope to offer additional support on a more personal level. Questions can also be emailed in advance to the Registry Helpdesk

As before, group training sessions will take place in the main computer room, with teaching on Data Entry (beginners only) and Data Retrieval. Sessions are repeated on Monday & Tuesday to allow more flexibility. Group training places are limited. A maximum of 30 delegates per session can pre-register via the congress registration form on http://www.akm.ch/ebmt2008. Please register for ONE data entry session and/or ONE data retrieval session only.

Educational Sessions from the WPs

The traditional “MED-B” sessions are being replaced with educational sessions giving more background info. on the disease / graft type rather than working through individual items in the forms. However, with the introduction of changes to the MED-AB forms this year, Working Party speakers will emphasise the revised items during or after their talk and give advice to data managers on how they should answer these new questions.

Emmanuelle Polge, data manager for the Acute Leukaemia Working Party, will present the new “Data in Action” session to demonstrate how your study data is being used in practice.

New clinical developments: Cell Therapy will be presented at EBMT 2008, following the introduction of the new registry and data collection form in 2007.

MED-AB Forms Update

We are pleased to announce that all MED-AB forms have been revised and implemented in the ProMISe (MED-AB) database. We would like to remind all centres that these forms are available to download as and when required from the Registry Section of the EBMT website please click here.

For ProMISe users, MED-B is now be entered into ProMISe using codes 12 (first report) and code 14 (follow up) in the field “form about to be entered”.

MED-A

The new MED-A form (first released in July 2007) has been revised and improved and you can download the very latest version at the above web link. We would be grateful if you could always complete the latest version of the forms and, most importantly, please do not complete any MED-A forms dated prior to July 2007: they are obsolete and cannot be entered in the registry database.

New MED-AB Appendix

In February 2008 we added an Appendix to the MED-AB forms which lists those items found in the CIBMTR TED form but not in the MED-A. The Appendix does not form part of the MED-A submission requirements for EBMT members; it is only mandatory if your centre is a CIBMTR Research centre, in order to comply with CIBMTR requirements. The EBMT Board agreed not to make these items part of the core MED-A so as not to increase the workload on EBMT centres. Most of the items in the new Appendix will be familiar to you, since they were already contained in the MED-B. The one exception is ‘comorbid condition’ therefore we have added this table as an appendix to the MED-B Auto/Allograft forms. This question has generated interest among EBMT centres who would like to use it in their own studies, and the Appendix will facilitate this.

In the MED-A, the Appendix has been inserted as pages 3 and 4 in the form and the revised MED-A can be downloaded from the MED-AB forms web page: http://www.ebmt.org/4Registry/registry3.html
