Last minute preparations for the upcoming EBMT 2008 Meeting in Florence

This year’s EBMT meeting is fast approaching and we would warmly invite you to register if you have not already done so. We are pleased to inform you that at the time of writing, two months before the congress, registration numbers show a 25% increase as compared to previous years. We hope this is due to the comprehensive scientific programme that we have put together for you and also because EBMT 2008 is to be held in this most attractive of locations - the city of Florence!

The new abstract selection process ran smoothly and we are delighted to have received a record number of abstracts - 1036 for the Physicians and Data managers and 172 for the Nurses: in total 1208 abstracts, certainly in part due to the fact that the abstract deadline was moved until after the ASH meeting. Our sincere thanks to all the abstract reviewers, and in particular the Team Leaders and National Scientific Committee members who participated in the abstract meeting to finalise the selections for the oral & poster sessions, creating a comprehensive and high quality programme. In view of the quality of submissions, we decided to increase the number of oral sessions to 19 and the space assigned to the posters has also been increased, allowing more room for discussion with authors and enabling the physicians’ posters to be accommodated together with those of the Nurses and Data Managers. We are also pleased to note that the two new topics introduced this year on “Experimental stem cell transplantation” and “Immunotherapy” received a high numbers of abstracts submissions.

The organisation of the 2nd Patient & Family Day for Saturday 29th March is going according to plan and we are publicising it as widely as possible to maximise attendance. Of course, we would still ask you to continue to advertise this event by contacting Patient Associations that you know of, and of course by encouraging your own patients and their families to participate. We have a very informative programme, which will allow for plenty of interaction between physicians, nurses and participants. The Day is free of charge and attendees are invited to a 'Get-Together' at the end of the event in the Palazzo degli Affari.

The Satellite Symposia programme takes place, as always, on Sunday from 09.00 – 18.00. A full programme of 16 symposia is on offer and we encourage you to participate in these interesting, up-to-the-minute sessions. The Nurses Pre-Study Meeting Day, also taking place on the Sunday, has a very informative, interesting programme aimed at nurses and allied healthcare professionals. The EBMT lecture at the Opening Session on Sunday evening is to be given by the distinguished physician Professor Alberto Marmont who will pose the question “Will haematopoietic stem cell transplantation cure human autoimmune diseases?” This will be preceded by the Van Bekkum Award and a special award to the new honorary EBMT member, Professor Rainer Storb.

The social programme kicks-off on Sunday evening with the Welcome Reception. This event is open to all participants and we invite you to come and mingle your colleagues. There will be typical Florentine products on display and Tuscan cuisine on offer to tempt your pallet, along with historic Florentine flag throwers or sbandieratori to keep you enthralled. The social events have been meticulously arranged to allow you to experience unique moments in some of the most beautiful locations in Florence, the Church of San Gaetano for the concert on Monday evening and the Palazzo Corsini for the EBMT Party/Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening are just two examples.

The scientific programme that follows from Monday through to Wednesday contains all the traditional educational, workshop and working party sessions, alongside two highly interesting plenary sessions and a special lunch session lecture delivered by Professor Storb on the "Past, Present and Future of Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation".

We are extremely fortunate to be living in the cradle of the Renaissance and we look forward to sharing it with you soon! We look forward to giving you a warm-hearted welcome to Florence and to sharing an enjoyable and successful meeting!
