EBMT Nurses Group Update

The summer has drawn to a close; some have taken time-out to rest and recuperate whilst others have used this period to dedicate time to their neglected projects taking them onto the next phase or even finalising them. Members of the EBMT Nurses Group and the Board spent the summer working away on the preparations for EBMT 2008.

Preparations for EBMT 2008

EBMT 2007 was a huge success – a total of 521 nurses from 52 countries attended the meeting. Among these, 29 nurses came from the meeting's host country: France, in short, a tremendous increase in attendance compared with previous years.

Deciding on the best speakers and topics to include in the scientific programme is always a challenge. The first step was to scrutinise the evaluation forms from last year’s sessions looking carefully at things that worked well and building on them in this year’s programme.

The educational sessions where evaluated as being of good to excellent quality. The workshops were also very well attended and again the majority was evaluated as excellent or very good. All of the presenters did a tremendous job to keep the attendees interested and absorbed in their respective topics.

The knowledge presented impressed the attendees and provided a springboard for further discussions and development of expertise.  The joint session on palliative care (Relapse – what’s next?) was very interesting and allowed participants to look at the concepts from a medical, nursing and psychological angle.

All posters that were presented received a lot of attention and the presenters entered into lively discussions with the attendees, sharing their experiences and talking about their work.

meeting

A variety of topics for the nurses’ educational sessions and workshops at EBMT 2008 were suggested by last year's attendees such as: Patient Information and Education; Aphaeresis and the Nursing Role; Symptom Management such as mucositis, Infection Control or Malnutrition. The vast majority of the attendees (see graph) said that they would recommend the conference to a colleague, and this is probably the best support we can get.

The Scientific Committee and NG Board together with the local contact nurses is now in the process of inviting selected experts to speak at the educational sessions and workshops.

Tradition has been to hold a pre-meeting Study Day. The Study Day in 2008 will cover different aspects of acute leukaemia (AML and ALL) including the presentations on the nutritional aspects of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation.

We will try to also organise a satellite session on the Sunday preceding the main conference and just after the pre-meeting Study Day – the topic for this will be decided on in the next few weeks. The outline for the EBMT 2008 congress can be downloaded from the official congress website.

Both the Scientific Committee and the EBMT Nurses Group Board are looking forward to receiving many abstracts from across the world. We ask members to have a think about their clinical data and what knowledge they could share at the meeting. As is customary, we will be able to offer a prize for the best abstract and best poster presentations. The Nurses Group asks its members to submit their abstracts on time – deadline for submission is 28th November 2007.

Mapping the Current and Emerging Role of Haematology Nurses in Europe

It is well known that haematology nursing and the role of nurses involved in the care of patients with a haematological disease throughout Europe is very diverse and not all details are very clear. Educational levels and tasks of the bedside nurse are very diverse and not easily comparable with one another. In close collaboration with Novartis Oncology Region Europe the EBMT Nurses Group have developed an on-line questionnaire (in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian) to map the current status and developments of the role. The questionnaire was sent to all EBMT NG members in September 2007 and was also distributed in hardcopy at the ECCO 14 Conference during the joint EBMT-NG / EONS Session as well as during the 19th German congress for Stem Cell Transplant (SCT) care. The results of the questionnaire are currently being analysed and will be presented as an abstract at the EBMT 2008 in Florence. The information gathered will support future strategic decisions of the EBMT NG Board on educational projects. The contact person on the NG Board is Erik Aerts – for further questions you can contact him at: erik.aerts@usz.ch.
