EBMT 2008
New edition of the ESH-EBMT handbook will be released in 2008

After having ¨sold¨ more then fifty thousand copies, our popular handbook on haemopoietic stem cell transplantation is being revised and will hopefully be released into print by the next EBMT congress. ¨Sold¨ requires quotation marks, as you all know that the book has always been available for free, and this is exactly the way we want it to be in the future. So, what will be different? Certainly, the contents will be improved. The editors re-read the handbook and met in Budapest on the 1st February 2007 to discuss how to renew the contents of the new handbook. We concluded that the philosophy of the handbook was not that of a pocket book. It should be readily available in the unit as an easy to read up-to-date guide. We examined which chapters needed only subtle modification, and which should be completely changed, and what additions were needed.
The new edition will be divided into three main parts, consisting of 43 chapters altogether, 20 of which will be brand new. For comparison, I would like to remind you that in the last edition we had only 19 chapters. We will try to keep a consistent style across all three parts of the handbook.
The first part will be theoretical. The opening chapter will be a more comprehensive introduction to BMT organisations that will focus not only on EBMT, but also on the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW), World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) and donor registries, Netcord, Eurocord etc. The renewed Chapters 2-5 will deal with the biological basis of haemopoiesis, immuno-genetics, sources and procurement of stem cells, while a brand new chapter will describe the transplant accreditation system.
In the second section, chapters 6-19 will be more practical, touching on the questions of conditioning, transfusion, supportive care, the management of infections, GvHD, and other early and late complications including Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) monitoring, immune reconstitution, post-transplant immunotherapy and psychosocial considerations. Again, a brand new chapter will close this section dealing with the methodology of clinical trials in Europe.

The editors (Eliane Gluckman, Enric Carreras, Jane Apperley and Tamás Masszi) are working hard on the new edition of the Handbook in Budapest. |
The final, third section will be the most different from the previous edition. This will include the outcome analysis in the different diseases. This will include several brand new chapters according to the indications, e.g.: new chapters for acute lymphocytic leukaemia, MDS, myeloproliferative diseases, myeloma and amylodosis, high grade, and low grade Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease etc. The structure of these disease-specific chapters will be similar including indication, conditioning, and results for autologous, allogeneic sibling, VUD, haplo and cord blood transplants.
The editors are convinced that the new edition of the handbook will be an even more valuable guide for practitioners in day-to-day patient care.
