Preparations for the EBMT 2008 Meeting |

Dear EBMT members, colleagues and friends
![]() |
Florence Cathedral |
We are currently making the final adjustments to both the scientific programme and the social events for EBMT 2008. Our focus when compiling the scientific programme was to underline diagnosis and the treatment of infections, the ever improving knowledge of cord blood as a stem cell source and the evolution of GvHD. We have included two plenary sessions on the last two topics.
We also wanted to encourage young basic scientists to participate and for this reason we have included two new topics of ¨Experimental stem cell transplantation¨ and ¨Immunotherapy¨ for abstract selection.
Furthermore, as you will have seen from the AKM email sent out at the beginning of September, another important new aspect in abstract process is that the submission deadline for physicians has been moved forward to 18th December 2007. This gives the possibility to those attending ASH to include late-breaking issues in their abstracts.
Following the very successful 1st edition last year in Lyon, we are delighted to be organising the 2nd Patient & Family Day which will be taking place on Saturday 29th March 2008. We would kindly ask you to publicise this event as much as possible by putting up the posters that we have sent to you, by contacting patients associations that you know of and of course by encouraging patients and their families from your centres to participate. All sessions will be interspersed with coffee breaks to allow participants to mingle with and meet the representatives from the nurse and patient associations who will be also be present. The sessions will be less technical in their content than the congress workshop and educational sessions so that they can be easily digested by the non-medical attendees. Simultaneous translation (Italian/English) will be offered this year to encourage non-Italians to attend. Registration is again free of charge.

The
Local Organising Committee is also well underway with the arrangements for the
social programme in a city which has an exceptional cultural
heritage and an abundance of choice, offering daily tours of Florence and the
surrounding countryside. The social events for participants are expected to be
particularly well attended as the locations chosen offer unique opportunities
to see some of the most prestigious locations in Florence: the Palazzo Corsini
for the Gala Dinner and the Church of San Gaetano for the concert on Monday evening
- a fine example of Baroque architecture in Florence. A selection of predominantly
Italian music will be sung by the exceptional Coro del Duomo, or Cathedral
choir.
We greatly look forward to giving you are warm-hearted welcome to Florence
in March 2008!
