JACIE

Accreditation

Over 100 applications have been registered with JACIE since January 2004. 35 centres have been accredited and a number are expected to complete their corrective actions in the near future. The full list of centres is available at www.jacie.org/portal/jacie/facilities.

If you expect to apply for accreditation, please contact the JACIE Office at jacie@ebmt.org as this information helps us in planning for inspections over the next 12-18 months.

3rd edition of the FACT-JACIE Standards

The 3rd edition was released in the USA at the end of 2006. Its release in Europe is subject to final approval by the JACIE Board which is expected in mid-February this year. Readers should note that the 3rd edition will be called the FACT-JACIE Standards, representing further progress towards truly international global standards.

Centres will have a six-month period from the date of publication in which to take the new Standards into account before they will be applied and the main changes will be highlighted and publicised beforehand. We expect to release the Accreditation Checklist well in advance of the implementation of the new edition in order to facilitate applicants and inspectors.

The JACIE sessions at the EBMT Annual Meeting in Lyon will present more detail on the new requirements.

JACIE at the EBMT Annual Meeting, March 25-28 2007 – For Your Diary!

  • The nursing role in JACIE (Workshop 6) 13.30-15.00 Monday, 26th March
  • JACIE Session 12.30–14.00 Wednesday, 28th March

This session will include:

    • Main developments in the 3rd edition of the Standards
    • Common areas of difficulty found during audits and possible solutions
    • Legal and regulatory affairs including air quality, labelling and import/export of stem cells

Last year's JACIE sessions in Hamburg were exceptionally well attended and we are sure that Lyon will be as successful. Don't forget that the session is a great opportunity to ask questions to the experts. So please mark your programme and stand-by for further updates.

Other sessions of interest are:

  • Joint Session EBMT / WMDA 11.00–12.30 Tuesday, 27th March.
  • Joint Session EBMT / ISEH / ISCT 11.00–13.00 Tuesday, 27th March.

As always, JACIE staff will be at the EBMT Stand during the meeting and we are always glad to offer whatever help we can with advice and clearing up any doubts you might have.

 Publications

A special report on JACIE has been published in Bone Marrow Transplant (February 2007). The article, Current status of JACIE accreditation in Europe: a special report from the Joint Accreditation Committee of the ISCT and the EBMT is accessible at http://www.jacie.org/portal/jacie.

 Deficiencies library

The second public version of the Deficiencies Library is now available for consultation at www.jacie.org. There are almost 700 items included in the library and analysis of the contents has provided interesting reading in terms of identifying where problems occur most often.

The second version is more comprehensive than the original and includes the deficiency and the recommendation. The library will allow centres to identity problems that occurred in other inspections and correct them in advance of the audit. It will also be used to instruct inspectors and to maintain consistency in the responses to deficiencies.
The document is entitled ‘Accreditation deficiencies v2.0.pdf’ and is located in the Document centre on the JACIE home page.

 Training

The next centre preparation course will take place in Athens, Greece at the end of June 2007. The course is designed to help centres who are starting to prepare for accreditation and will include an introduction to quality management, documentation and planning. Details have been sent to National Representatives. Those interested should contact their national representative to advise them of their interest.

An Inspector Training Course is being organised for mid-September 2007, again in Athens. Again information will be made available to the National Representatives when the all details have been finalised.

Training courses are generally organised at national level by national societies or individual institutions. Another approach is the ‘JACIE Day’ which has been organised successfully in the United Kingdom and Switzerland and uses a more discussion-based format. If you or your national society are interested in organising a course or information day, JACIE can provide you with course format, slides, content and recommend experts. Please contact us at jacie@ebmt.org.
