A short review of the EBMT Congress 2008 The 24th EBMT Meeting of the Nurses Group took place on 30th March – 2nd April 2008 in Florence. As is customary, the nurses held their pre-meeting study day on Sunday 30th March just before the start of the EBMT congress. 166 nurses and other allied health professionals working in the field of haematology and stem cell transplantation had an exciting day discussing and deliberating over the topics of leukaemia and nutrition. EBMT 2008 welcomed 698 nurses from across Europe to share experience and knowledge with colleagues and to hear the latest updates in field of nursing. The high attendance figures suggest a strong interest in the activities of the EBMT Nurses Group which will hopefully mean more involvement from colleagues in the day-to-day activities of the group. As EBMT 2008 drew to a close it was necessary to say good-bye to two highly esteemed colleagues from the Board.
Outgoing Nurses Group Board On behalf of the EBMT-NG Board, we would like to sincerely thank Monica Fliedner and Mairead Ni Chonghaile for their contributions and tireless efforts in driving the Nurses Group forward. The following individuals will make up the Nurses Group Board in 2008: Erik Aerts (CH) - President
New Nurses Group Board
Communication & Networking Committee Sara Zulu (NL) (Chair) is now being supported by two new colleagues, Sabine Degen (CH) and Amelia Murst (DE). The remit of this committee is to produce the NG Newsletter, containing updates and information on various continuing developments. The latest Newsletter is available for download from the EBMT web page. Click here.
Becky Stone (UK) (Chair) of the Research Committee started working with the new colleagues in this Committee following EBMT 2008: Eva Johansson (SE) Research is made possible through an excellent group that provides innovative and practice-relevant research of a high quality, which, in this field, cannot be emphasised enough. The research agenda will be sent to members in the coming weeks.
Currently the EBMT NG is working together with seven EBMT-NG national groups. These groups are working on several projects on a regional, national and international level. Collaboration with national groups is very useful and interesting for members. It is hoped that other National Groups will be formed in the near future giving the NG network an even wider outreach. Should you be interested in setting up your country’s own national group, please do not hesitate to contact us at: nurses@ebmt.org. The NG Board supports this kind of initiative and is most willing to offer you advice and information in achieving your endeavour.
In 2007 the EBMT-NG board carried out a survey together with Novartis Oncology Region Europe on ‘Defining the Scope of Haematology Nursing Practice Across Europe.’ We developed this survey with the aim of gaining a clearer insight into the current and emerging roles of haematology nurses in Europe, and to identify their specific educational needs. We also wanted to provide information for planning educational initiatives, as this will better enable us to involve the nurses who are caring for patients with malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders in the whole process. You will find the results of this survey at: www.ebmt.org/6NursesGroup/nurses1.html The EBMT-NG Board feels it is important to expand and optimise existing educational projects. Our goal is to make educational and professional development initiatives accessible to all haematology nurses across Europe.
The EBMT-NG “Scientific Committee”: The Scientific Committee has already started preparations for the next meeting, which will be the 25th Meeting of the EBMT-NG in Göteborg, Sweden. Please make note of this conference as one of the most interesting appointments in your calendar. A unique event to present your work! More and more we are confronted with caring for elderly patients, patients in a palliative care situations and having to deal with other treatment options. This has meant that a number of our responsibilities have had to be realigned. In is primary importance that the NG moves with these changes and embraces a reality affecting all nurses working in the field of HSCT. Furthermore, it is become more and more evident that allied health care professionals (like dieticians, physiotherapists, spiritual care givers and other interested persons and parties like pharmaceutical companies) would like to collaborate with the NG. In our opinion, it is extremely important to collaborate with other associations and with other working parties not just external to the EBMT but within the EBMT itself. We are looking forward to developing these contacts and meeting with other associations. The EBMT Nurses Group board has already started working towards these goals. With pleasure we anticipate a period with many things to do: a period in which together we meet challenges with vigour and with enjoyment. I am looking forward to it.
