JACIE at the EBMT Annual Meeting, 30th March -2nd April 2008, Florence

JACIE featured strongly at the EBMT Annual Meeting. Under the title “Clinical Dilemmas in JACIE Accreditation”, the JACIE Session in 2008 place the emphasis on interaction with the audience in the form of panel discussions and Question-&-Answers. The session attracted over 300 people, testimony to the continued high interest in JACIE-related topics.

We also organised a Quality Management Exploratory Meeting. The first aim of the meeting was to have an open discussion on how the profile of quality management can be raised at the EBMT annual meeting and the 140 attendees participated with suggestions and questions. The second aim was to establish a working group or committee that will develop a programme to be included in the 2009 EBMT congress in Göteborg, Sweden. The resulting feedback offered valuable suggestions for the format and content of the programme and this will be analysed by the Core Group and Network that is being established to design a programme for Göteborg focussed on quality management.

Almost 50 people expressed an interest in joining the core group and/or the network. The Core Group will consist of 5 members with the remaining applicants being included in the Network.

The Nurses JACIE Workgroup drew 150 attendees who were able to hear Mary Coussons of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital describe her team’s experience of accreditation.

Inspectors

jacieinspectors1a1a

A half-day inspector refresher course was held at the EBMT Meeting in Florence. The course was aimed at updating inspectors on developments in the Standards, providing guidance on specific issues that arise during inspections and getting feedback from the participants on their experiences and suggestions for improvements.

We propose to hold another course at the ISCT Regional Meeting in Antwerp on 14th September 2008. If you are a interested in attending this course please contact the JACIE Office at: jacie@ebmt.org

Training

jacietraining1

An Inspector Training Course is provisionally scheduled for 18th -19th September in Athens. We are currently carrying out pre-registration to ensure that there are sufficient participants. Details will be available from JACIE National Representatives and on the JACIE web site. Anyone interested should note the minimum experience requirements as described below:

    • An inspector of a Clinical Transplant Program shall hold a medical degree and be licensed to practice medicine, and have a minimum of five years of clinical blood and marrow transplant experience.

    • An inspector of a Haematopoietic Progenitor Cell Collection Facility shall hold a medical degree or PhD and have five years experience in haematopoietic cell collection procedures, including apheresis; or, shall have five years experience as the nurse or technician supervising the collection of peripheral blood progenitor cells by apheresis.

    • An inspector of a Cell Processing Laboratory shall hold a medical degree or PhD or a professional degree in biological sciences or medical technology, and have five years experience as a Laboratory Director, Medical Director, or Supervisor of an HCP Laboratory.

If you meet these requirements, you are invited to contact the JACIE Office at: jacie@ebmt.org.

Training courses are generally organised at national level by national societies or individual institutions. Another approach is the ‘JACIE Day’ which has been successfully organised in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey and uses a more discussion-based format. If you or your national society are interested in organising a course or information day, JACIE can provide you with course format, slides, content and recommend experts. Please contact us at jacie@ebmt.org.
