This year we were proud to make three
Fellowship Awards as part of the EBMT-AMGEN Fellowship Programme. The Fellowship
Evaluation Committee congratulates the high-calibre of all the applications received
this year. Dr. Tomas Skacel, International Medical Affairs Director, who
represented AMGEN on the Evaluation Committee commented:
"Amgen
congratulates the winners for their excellent preclinical and clinical fellowship
research projects in the field of hemato-oncology. We are proud to support the
European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation Clinical Fellowship program
and hope that this opportunity will allow these promising young physicians to
pursue their important projects which will contribute to advances in clinical
research and improve patient care."
At the EBMT Welcome Ceremony, winners were warmly invited on stage to accept their awards by Dietger Niederwieser, and Dietmar Berger the Executive Director of Global Clinical Development, Oncology from AMGEN.

Our
congratulations go to Annalisa Ruggeri (Milan), Shaul Avraham (Israel) and Cindy
Lee (Australia) and also to Marie von Lilienfeld-Toal (Germany) who was presented
with her award from 2006, we wish them all the best in their respective projects.
Those awardees who were unable to attend the ceremony had their certificates collected
on their behalf by the Principal Investigators from their host institutions.
Jane Apperley accepted on behalf of Shaul Avraham and Kim Orchard on behalf of
Cindy Lee.

Dirk Van Bekkum presented this year’s award to Prof. Alejandro Madrigal who received it on behalf of the Antony Nolan Research Institute for the centre’s study entitled:
‘Single nucleotide polymorphisms of the NOD2/CARD15 gene are associated with significant increases in disease relapse and death in recipients of an unrelated donor haematopoietic stem cell transplant for acute leukaemia’

Two awards of Honorary Membership were made at EBMT 2007. The first award went to Prof. Theodor Fliedner for his enormous contribution to the development of stem cell transplantation, especially in the field of total body irradiation and nuclear accident response worldwide.
The second honorary membership was granted to José Carreras in recognition of the enormous contribution he has made to the development of BMT throughout Europe. The José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation through its promotion of bone marrow transplantation and support for research and clinical infrastructure has played a crucial role in advancing the BMT field and the fight against leukaemia. José Carreras will receive his award at the next José Carreras gala dinner later this year.

Nature Publishing Poster Prizes
Each year two prizes for the best posters are awarded
by The Nature Publishing Group. John Goldman presented the Nature Publishing
Prizes for the best Clinical Poster and the best Science Poster. The awards were
