The 1st  Spanish Study Day for Nurses in the field of Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Participants at the 1st Spanish HSCT Study Day for Nurses

Cristina Gallego, Chair of the Spanish National Nurses Group, and Monica Fliedner, President of the EBMT Nurses Group, report on the 1st Nurses Study Day on Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) that was held on the 28th of April in Alicante, Spain as part of The 11th ESH-EBMT Training Course on Blood and Marrow Transplantation for physicians organised by the European School of Haematology (ESH) and the European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (EBMT).

The Study Day was organised as a collaboration of the ‘Grupo Español de Trasplante Hematopoyético’ (GETH), Fundación Carreras, and the EBMT and ESH.

The programme of the study day was planned by the EBMT Spanish National Nurses Group (Grupo Español de Enfermería de Trasplante de Progenitores Hematopoyéticos, GEE-TPH) in collaboration with GETH.

The programme included topics such as:

  • The Patho-physiology of the Haematopoietic System;
  • Sources of Stem Cells, their Function and Use;
  • An evidence based Nursing Approach Towards Infection Prevention in HSCT;
  • Advances in the Treatment of Haematological Malignancies and their Impact on Nursing Care.

Four different workshops provided the opportunity to discuss specific topics in smaller groups. These topics were:

  • Protective care systems;
  • Accreditation process using JACIE;
  • Ethical dilemmas;
  • GvHD and nursing considerations.

Delegates Attending One of the Sessions

The interest and enthusiasm shown by participating nurses in the Study Day far surpassed the expectations of the event’s organisers.

More than 80 nurses coming from different transplant units from across Spain actively participated in the discussions. For the participating nurses the day offered the opportunity to share knowledge, exchange care specific news and projects and to learn from experts in the field. Thanks to the course being held in Spanish, no language barrier hindered the fruitful discussions. Following the strong interest and positive evaluation by the attendees, the idea is to work hard within the GEE-TPH board at continuing this format of Nurses Meeting probably on an annual basis. In the future financial and logistical support will of course have to be found.

This 1st Study Day signals a great achievement for nurses heralding a new training forum for HSCT. The nurses of the country that hosts the Annual ESH-EBMT Training Course on Blood and Marrow Transplantation can be the promoters and the designers of the Study Day programme and the course will be able to run in their own language.  Nurses who may be interested in becoming involved in this should contact Monica Fliedner.

The EBMT Nurses Group board would like to thank all active participants for their contribution in the lively discussions, but our special gratitude goes to Cristina Gallego, and to her team in Barcelona: Rosario Laborda, Nuria Borras, Asun Turró, Montserrat Valverde, Dolors López, Neus Pelay, Adelina Hernando, Montse Pallejà, Jaume Güell, and Enric Carreras for their outstanding work in organising this day and their constructive collaboration. We would also like to thank the speakers who put together their outstanding contributions to the programme within a very short period of time.
