Background

A major issue when analysing registry data is the choice of the most appropriate statistical method. Statistical tools play a crucial role in all steps of a study, from the design, to data collection and finally analysis. In addition, understanding statistical methodologies are a prerequisite for the correct interpretation of results. The EBMT, as a scientific organisation, actively promotes retrospective research on all aspects concerning hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. For this reason, the EBMT board has decided to create this new statistical sub-committee

The primary objectives of the members of this committee are the following:

1. to be available to assist clinicians with issues related to statistics e.g. doubts about the proper statistical analysis, interpretation of results, choosing appropriate statistical tools, etc.
2. to work in collaboration with the data management subcommittee and make recommendations on coding of items, management of missing data and any other issues important for statistical analyses (see statistical guidelines).
3. to encourage a more homogeneous use of statistical methods when analysing survival data for retrospective and prospective studies among the different WPs
4. to develop and disseminate new statistical tools when necessary

• Statistical modeling of complex disease histories in BMT: Guidelines for proper use and interpretation of the Cox model

Meetings

Two meetings will be held each year which are targeted at an audience of both clinicians and data managers: Presentations and/or discussions will focus on statistical background and hypotheses of survival analyses, specifically applied in the field of transplantation to the use of statistical software and the interpretation of the results.

• The first meeting is the annual statistical symposium which is held during the EBMT Annual Meeting. It's aim is to present, explain and disseminate new methodologies and more specific statistical issues, usually with 2 or 3 invited speakers.
• The second meeting is a new EBMT-ESH (European School of Haematology) statistical workshop: This workshop takes place every year in parallel with the ESH-EBMT educational training course.
