Introduction to the Lymphoma Working Party

Anthony Goldstone founded the Lymphoma Working Party (LWP) of the EBMT more than 10 years ago. Since then it has been in continuous growth. Nowadays, it represents one of the largest WP within the EBMT, with almost 50.000 patients reported for lymphoma and transplantation since the beginning of the lymphoma database. There were almost 5.000 new patients in 2004 and there are more than 500 centres reporting for this disease.

A new chair was elected in 2004, Anna Sureda (Barcelona, Spain), succeeding Norbert Schmitz (Hamburg, Germany.) There is an appointed statistician Carmen Canals dedicated to the WP who works along with Goli Taghipour, the data manager in London, and the LWP Assistant Stephen Marcos Jones who supports the Chair.

Training constitutes one of the main objectives of the LWP, with a Annual Educational Course on “Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Lymphomas.” The principal objective of these courses is to cover the main aspects of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in lymphoproliferative disorder.

Research and publications of retrospective and prospective analyses constitute another objective of the LWP. The LWP is running three prospective studies, one in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and two in Hodgkin’s lymphoma, all in areas where there is currently little data in stem cell transplant recipients.

In the coming years, there is a lot of work to do in the LWP and many goals to accomplish. In order to enhance the development of both prospective and retrospective analysis, it is a priority to strengthen the relationship between the LWP and the different National Lymphoma Groups, as well as the ASBMT.
