This
trial is a prospective randomized, multicentric study, designed
according to the recommendations for EBMT trials, and supported
by Wyeth Lederle. Patients between 5 and 65 years are eligible if
they received an allogeneic stem cell transplantation 85 to 109
days before inclusion, and have not experienced S. pneumoniae since
transplant. They are randomized to receive 3 injections of Prevenar®
at one month intervals, beginning : either on d100 ± 10 (Early
Group), or at 9 months ± 10 days (Late Group), followed by
one dose of 23 valent polysaccharide (PS23) vaccine administered
at 12 and 18 months post-transplant, respectively. The primary endpoint
is based on the serum level of antipneumococcal antibodies to the
7 serotypes included in the conjugate vaccine after 3 injections.
Fifteen centres from 7 countries participate. The trial has been
open since December 2001 in France, and January 2002 in Sweden.
It is expected to open in centres in other countries in Spring 2002.
An update
of this study was presented at EBMT 2005 in Prague.
