The
EBMT Autoimmune Disease Working Party (ADWP) was established during the EBMT annual
meeting in Courmayeur,in 1997.
As of March 2004, Riccardo Saccardi (Florence,
Italy), a haematologist, succeeded Alan Tyndall, to become the second Chairman
of the AD WP. The aims of the WP are, among others, the promotion and completion
of trials begun under the previous chairman along with parallel studies providing
a more comprehensive understanding of both the disease treated and the therapy.
These include ASTIMS, ASTIL, ASTIS and ASTIC (see
studies page).
As the concept of HSCT for severe AD has developed,
more resources need to be invested by the WP in the orientation and information
dissemination to colleagues in specialities for which HSCT is new. New applications
of cellular therapies are envisaged for autoimmune diseases (as they are, in parallel,
for other diseases), after the establishment of their basic scientific relevance
and clinical safety.
The original database established in Basel was
extended to include multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and other autoimmune
diseases and has now been successfully transported into the new PROMISE Database.
We also have a new data manager based at the Paris Central Office, coordinated
by Virginie Chesnel All new registrations should be reported to ProMISe.
Our database currently contains data on more than 700 transplants (no USA
cases are included in this number).

The ADWP has
decided to publish a new quarterly newsletter to keep members informed of the
Working Party´s activities.
