Background

In 1990, the EBMT introduced an annual survey to prospectively collect numbers of patients treated with a hematopoetic stem cell transplant according to indication, donor type and stem cell source. Its importance was immediately realised and since then, the survey has become an instrumental tool for assessing the real picture of HSCT in Europe, recognising trends, illustrating the current status and providing essential data for counselling and planning. This survey is relevant to health care agencies, industries as well as patients. In addition, it serves as a quality control instrument for comparison with national agencies or for the EBMT auditing process.

All transplant teams are invited to join the survey: for EBMT members it is a mandatory
process, for non-members it is voluntary.

Participate in the Activity Survey 2008

Participate in the 2008 Activity Survey. Note that the Med A data reported to the EBMT Med AB database -Promise- is not automatically included in the Activity Survey. Even if you report your transplant data to the EBMT, by paper Med A form, electronically with the ProMISe system or via a National Registry, please report to this survey too.

Instructions:

1. Click on the link 'EBMT Calender Year Survey 2008'
2. Save the file to your Desktop or another easy to remember location.
3. Name the file "CIC (your number)". If you do not have a CIC number, call the file after your institution.
4. Complete the data fields.
5. Email the form to the survey coordinator at baldomeroh@uhbs.ch.
The 2008 calendar year survey may be accessed by clicking on the link above. We recommend that you read the guidelines carefully before filling out the survey.

Guidelines for reporting data to the EBMT Activity Survey 2008.

Table 1: Report the total number of patients receiving their 1st transplant in your centre in 2008. Report the first allogeneic transplant and/or first autologous transplant per patient according to disease indication, donor type and stem cell source as outlined in Table 1. You may include the same patient twice as long as the first occurrence of each type of transplant took place in 2008.

The following EBMT/JACIE/FACT definitions for ‘first transplants’ apply:

  • first transplant (new patient, never transplanted before)
  • first allograft (after a previous autograft) or first autograft (after a previous allograft)
  • first allograft or first autograft in your centre after a previous transplant in a different centre.

The column ‘total allo after auto’ refers to patients with their disease treatment in a planned ‘allo after auto’ transplant programme. Enter these patients in both the respective allogeneic or autologous transplant section in the main table and in the column ‘total allo after auto’ on the right side.

The following definitions for donor type and stem cell source apply:

  • Non-id = any family member (matched or mismatched) other than HLA-identical sibling or twin.

For combinations of stem cell products / donor types:

  • Bone marrow and peripheral blood = peripheral blood stem cell transplant - enter as PBSC
  • Bone marrow and cord blood = cord blood transplant - enter as Cord
  • Peripheral blood and cord blood = cord blood transplant - enter as Cord
  • Bone marrow and peripheral blood + cord blood = cord blood transplant - enter as Cord
  • Autologous stem cells given together with an allogeneic transplant within 7 days = allogeneic transplant
  • Multiple infusions, e.g. double cord, multiple cord, multiple PBSC within one week are reported as one transplant only.

Table 2: Report the total number of retransplants and additional (non-first) transplants performed with allogeneic BM, PBSC or Cord blood in 2008.

Table 3: Report the total number of retransplants and additional (non first) transplants performed with autologous BM, PBSC or Cord blood in 2008

The following definitions for table 2 and 3 apply only if the rules for 1st transplants do not apply:

  • A Retransplant is an unplanned transplant performed due to relapse, rejection of the first transplant or for any other secondary malignancy.
  • An Additional transplant (non-first transplant) is when a double, triple or more ‘multiple graft programme’ is planned from the beginning of the treatment protocol.
  • Re-infusion of allogeneic stem cells for graft failure is considered to be a retransplant. Enter in Table 2 as a retransplant.
  • Re-infusion of autologous stem cells for non-engraftment is considered to be a boost and is not a transplant.

Table 4: collects generic information (i.e. total numbers only) on additional cellular therapies or technologies.

  • Cord Blood: enter the total number of all cord blood transplants performed in 2008.
  • RIC (Reduced Intensity Conditioning transplants): enter the total number of all RIC transplants performed in 2008 (this includes first HSCT from Table 1 and/or re- or additional HSCT from Table 2).
  • DLI (Donor Lymphocyte Infusions): enter the total number of patients receiving DLI in 2008. The year of transplant does not effect the DLI reporting.
  • MSC (Mesenchymal stromal cells): enter the total numbers on MSC stromal cell transplants performed in 2008.
  • Cell transplants for non-hematopoietic use: enter the number of patients receiving cell transplants for NON-hematopoietic use in 2008.

Table 5: To calculate the total number of transplants in 2008: add together the total number of allogeneic transplants from Table 1 + Table 2 = Total allo HSCT and the total number of autologous transplants from Table 1 + Table 3 = Total auto HSCT to provide the total number of ALL TRANPLANTS performed in 2008.

Please use the document 'Reduced Intensity Conditioning definitions' drafted in 2005 by the EBMT Definitions Committee in London to aid your reporting of RIC (mini allo) transplants.

Please also use the ´disease definitions document´ for defining any indications that you are unsure about.
