What
is Outreach ?
A programme of activities developed by the EBMT, in
collaboration with the European School of Haematology, aimed at supporting
emerging BMT programmes and transplant centres in countries with limited
resources and/or experience.
Key objectives of the Outreach programme include:
- Facilitating wider participation of members in
EBMT activities
- Encouraging and promoting collaboration, through
building long-lasting relationships between BMT centres (see
the Outreach Exchange Board below)
- Developing projects to provide training and support
for transplant programmes, with a view to harmonisation of BMT standards
& practice across Europe and beyond
- Identifying resources and funding to support Outreach
initiatives
Outreach countries have been defined from the outset
of the Outreach project as countries classified as lower and upper-middle
income according to the World
Bank Classification
Although the majority of EBMT members (81%) are located in Western
Europe, the proportion of its centres from outside this area is rising,
with a particularly strong increase in membership from Eastern Europe
and Balkan countries over the past few years.

Information & Advocacy
THE EBMT Information & Advocacy Initiative is aimed
at identifying particular issues arising for transplant programmes
in Outreach countries in relation to the application of regulations
or adopting standard practice. These may relate to the need for information
or assistance in establishing a BMT unit, or for progressing from
an auto to allo programme, or requests for authorisation certificates
for drugs and medical supplies, etc.
The idea is to develop general documents, guidelines and policy statements
issued by the EBMT, which will be made available for download in the
documents section below. It will also allow the EBMT to identify key
issues to be addressed in discussion forums with the National Authorities
and European Union.
Please communicate any issues to the Fellowship Committee by sending
an email entitled EBMT Information & Advocacy to fellowships@ebmt.org

ASH
International Outreach Initiative
Since 1999, ASH has distributed educational
materials to institutions and cooperative groups in developing
countries through its International Outreach Initiative
(IOI). The goal of the IOI is to help address the hematology-related
needs in research, practice, and training in these areas of
the world. The ASH International Members Committee oversees
the IOI.
Eligible countries include institutions in Argentina, Brazil,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Pakistan, Poland, Russian
Federation, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovak Republic, Turkey and
the Ukraine, amongst others with a low GDP.
Educational materials that are distributed through the IOI
include:
- An online subscription to Blood,
the Journal of the American Society of Hematology, published
24 times per year
- A CD-ROM containing a searchable database
of the most recent ASH abstracts;
- A copy of Hematology,
the ASH Education Program Book, which includes manuscripts
written by each education program speaker from the most recent
annual meeting;
- A CD-ROM that features the audio-visual presentation
of the education program and special lectures from the most
recent annual meeting;
- An online copy of the ASH Self-Assessment
Program (ASH-SAP), a hematology reference with self-test questions
and critiques (print edition available by special request).
Visitor
Training Program
The Visiting Trainee Program provides funding
support to scientists and haematologists in developing countries
(see list of countries given above) to allow them an opportunity
to gain valuable clinical or laboratory experience, or technological
training. The program is intended to allow these professionals
to gain educational and practical experience on a specific topic
for up to 12 weeks at a host institution. During this period
it is expected that the trainee will gain new knowledge and
skills that can be applied upon return to his/her home institution.
ASH
Education Program Book
Starting with the 2000 edition of Hematology,
the ASH Education Program Book, this Web site provides an easily
navigable and searchable resource that is available to all users
at no charge. Bookmark www.asheducationbook.org
today!
ASH
Image Bank
We would recommend consulting the ASH
Image Bank, which is intended to serve as a comprehensive
reference and teaching tool that is widely accessible to physicians
and hematology students around the world. The images are presented
in a digital, case-based format that allows both the images
and text to be searched, cross-referenced, and hyper-linked
to other cases as well as other educational resources, including
Hematology, the Society's annual meeting Education Program Book,
the ASH Teaching Cases and the syllabus from the ASH Self-Assessment
Program. In addition to the case studies, the Image Bank includes
a collection of basic atlas images.
This project is a major outreach effort to the clinical and
academic community, defined as members of ASH, internists, clinical
pathologists, pediatricians, hematologists and oncologists.
The new contents alert service allows anyone who registers their
e-mail address to be notified via e-mail when new content in
ASH Image Bank goes online.

BloodLine was launched in December of 1995 at
the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. Initially,
it was a reference site containing links to important hematology
sites and resources on the Internet. Over the years, the site
has gone through many major revisions with the aim of placing
more emphasis on the publication of original content and improving
the site's editorial focus and scientific validity.
Bloodline, a publication of Carden
Jennings Publishing Co., Ltd., is dedicated to furthering
and enhancing the fields of hematology and oncology through
the presentation of knowledge in the following manners:
- the publication of original clinical and
laboratory research.
- the creation of comprehensive reference
works that are continuously useful to clinicians and researchers
in the blood sciences.
