The
EBMT Outreach Project commenced in 2001 in collaboration with ESH to develop
a programme of activities aimed at supporting blood and marrow transplantation
in lower income countries. Although the majority of EBMT members (81%)
are located in Western Europe, the proportion of its centres from outside
this area is rising, with a particularly strong increase in Eastern European
membership over the past few years.
The project has been developed through a number of Outreach Sessions held
at EBMT Annual Meetings.
An overview of these sessions and slide presentations can be consulted

Project
Aims
The
Outreach Project aims to:
- Improve
awareness of EBMT / ESH activities on an international level
- Support
haematology & bone marrow transplant units in lower income countries
- Increase
the participation of these centres in EBMT / ESH activities
- Encourage
collaboration and build relationships between centres
Project Development
Following
initial discussions at the EBMT Board meeting in October 2001, a meeting
took place in Montreux, where the following activities were suggested
and discussed:
- Educational
exchanges
- Technical
training
- Training
in statistical programmes and data management support
- Support
in the preparation of grant applications
- Support
for lower income centres to increase their participation in clinical
trials
- Help
in preparation for accreditation procedures
- Development
of a Twin Centres programme in which established units are linked to
centres in lower income countries: the "twins" are then encouraged
to develop joint activities and provide mutual support and expertise,
as appropriate.
Outreach Project
Survey
The Education Sub-committee held
an outreach meeting in Paris in July 2002 to compile
the following surveys:
Survey
1: For centres in "lower" income countries, in order to
access their needs
Survey 2: For centres in high income countries, to find out what they
thought they could do to help centres in outreach countries and to ask
for details of any 'twinning' experiences.
The results
of this survey were presented by Fiona McDonald, at the EBMT Annual
Meeting in Istanbul in June 2003.
In preparation for an outreach session for the EBMT Annual
Meeting in Prague in March 2005, Vladamir Koza compiled an un-dated survey
for centres in Central and Eastern European countries. To view the session
